Robert Gligorov

Un fallo e' speculare all'idea. A te la palla (Robert Gligorov)
Bene, Robert.
Grazie Robert.(M.Filippa)
Marco Filippa meets Robert Gligorov

Some years ago I held a course in contemporary and modern art history, it was open to everyone, and this was a good thing, because people were really interested and passionate. I closed the course with a picture of one of your works dated 1997, a gun pointed in the mouth of a skull wearing eye-glasses. It seemed to me a perfect way to open the discourse about present, about future. A paradigm-image, like all of your works. I remember that I classified your work under the formula “new realities” and I included the work by Maurizio Cattelan, Nan Goldin, Jeff Koons and others. Searching now among your works I discover that there is a previous version, but here there is a dick pointing to the skull’s mouth. Robert, I choose to open the conversation in this way, I let speak you now.
(M. Filippa)

A singer, in his professional career, re-sings his song a thousand times in live concerts… I think that at a certain point he turns to hate some songs, even if they are great hits. I have always thought “poor them”… it is like repeating a word many times, again and again… well, its very meaning begins to lose its primary sense. So, when you hear talking a person well armed with culture, you hear sophisticated, uncommon words… our failure to understand the meaning without knowing the word induce us to give value to the speaker and the mystery of the term, of the word, moves our imagination and perhaps we give to the content itself a superior value. This happened to me when I didn’t speak English yet… listening to songs in English (Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen…) I didn’t understand the meaning, but according to experts they were geniuses… how could I contradict them? So I started to imagine incredible meanings, as if they were the most lightened persons… the films in English too… it seemed that their contents were more elevate, but then with the years, taking up the trouble to learn the languages and the meanings of the words and translating the texts I understood that the songs in Italian or films in Italian had no inferior meanings compared to the foreign ones, on the contrary, the albums by De Andrè, De Gregori were completely competitive. This is to say that in the art field something similar happens, art is made of images, not with words. Many contemporary artists play it easy because they are confident in the public’s ignorance, who, like I did with songs in English, attributes a plus value to the art work, that probably does not exist.
An example; if a contemporary work of art was dissected by know-all scientists and not by partisan critics, giving also a technological support calculating all probabilities determining the original genesis of that work, probably a good 80% of celebrated or historicized works should disappear from circulation. There is no worst thing in art than re-make worn out concepts or attitudes, camouflaged as original. Yes, I think that human progress really does not invent anything original, but everything is re-packed… the substance remains… Sorry, I’m dwelling too much… coming back to your question I must say that I have always kept in mind the commercial side of my work as well. It is useless to hide this matter, as if the commercialization of an artist’s work was a casual fact… we all know that an artist’s success is a true marketing strategy… I would propose it as a study matter at Bocconi University, every false step can destroy your career (and I’m not joking). Selling one’s own self is a true form of art and, as someone says, a painting is finished when it is sold. In my work I use subjects, objects, materials that attract me, without censures. This obviously makes me pay a price. The difficulties to sell one of my works for its shocking subject or for some critics thinking I am too much self-referential… but I’m not posing, I think I am completely myself in the choice of my images. So, the work XXXRay (the one with the dick in mouth) is the original idea, while the B version is the one with the gun in the mouth… more sedative and more commercial too. Back in 1997 this work was very criticized when I first exhibited it in Belgium (Bruxelles at Aeroplastics). But coming back to the ignorance of the public, I give you an example you can verify yourself easily on the web; a collegue of mine Vim Delvoye (from Belgium) created the same concept in 2001 (sex rays – blow1) and it seems that he sold it on a large scale. Well, I have no copyright in my art as one may have with music, so it is impossible to claim the authorship of the work… works like Richard Prince’s, who takes pictures from De Kooning, photographs from reportage books and not only that, artists such as Cattelan, who re-packages already famous ad images and art, Warhol, who takes daisies from a review and steals them… and many, many other examples… Some of them have lawsuits pending because the author of the shot would like to receive the profits from the use of it… I remember a case lost by Wahrol for a swimming-pool taken from a newspaper… He had to give up his work and even a certain amount of money to the original author… You know, xray has been used in art before I did. But I was attracted by the transparency of an organism, like certain fishes living in the deep of seas, and having found a doctor willing lo let me use the xray machine, I though it was a good opportunity to pursue the idea. The skull is a symbol of death and the weapon, both the gun and the phallus can generate both life and death. A weapon can give you liberty, can take the word out of you mouth or kill you. A phallus is symmetric to the idea. It’s up to you now.
(R. Gligorov)

Well, Robert. It seems like we are playing a good ping-pong match, but seen through an editing machine, with the exact perception of what is happening. I don’t want to flatter you, but I agree totally with what you say. The fortune of contemporary art resides often in public’s ignorance and in the proliferation of a myriad of “artists” (has anyone counted how may “artists” we have nowadays?); We should open the discourse to the civilization of images and about the absence of genuine education about it. Lacking the know-alls, a serious critical exercise (far from me the definition of “critic”, not out of modesty, I swear, but because the interest in art springs from a passion which is contingent to my life itself) is anyway limited and lives confined in self-referential aspect… in some way the world of contemporary art is suffering from particular neurosis. I agree also with the necessity to commercialize one’s work. I remember Laurie Anderson, and by the way I estimate her very much, saying in an interview how she envied the artists living in a loft, far from the world. A romantic residue which willingly ignores life contingencies. Creating an art work has its costs, and selling it is integral part of the work itself. No discussion about your potential self-referenciality: your works are talking about you and with lucid coherence your images are sliding like fragments of the same discourse. Monument Valley, Blood Rain, Piazza del Duomo… just to quote some works, origin from a common humus, from a disorienting vision, they are in some ways evolutions of Duchamp’s ready-made but they are also far from that logic and have always the force of the magic of an image, the same force we find in the primitive man who scratched his signs in caverns with the only difference that the space now is another one (I thought I had the capacity of being synthetic, but I have to change my mind)
(M. Filippa)

You know, sometimes in order to justify our own position we look at things from above and, like paranoiacs we judge other people’s doings, this has done so, that one has copied that, this one is protected by a lobby… this one is copying me… and in fact we loose too much time trying to find our place or being accepted. An artist, but this happens in many other fields, may of course search for approval and fame, but one has to be educated or instructed to live with it, should happen the accident of becoming famous… we must see if so much ability to plan a career is just greed for success or if it is a way to scrape through or nothing… one is just predestined.
Yes, of course, people around you have many expectations at the first signals of success or approval: the gallery director hopes that his investment is going to bring him back profits, your wife, that maybe has left her work to follow your career, now is thinking it’s time to talk about accounting, your mama, who has never approved your choice of being an artist, and your father who is too much absent-minded and is not much involved in it all… and then your friends at the bar… at a certain point they boast and are proud of being friends of a true artist, one who is going to enter art history… So, all those things become a pressing over your art work… as Jackson Pollock said about Picasso “It seems that that fellow in Europe is able to succeed in everything”. There are contemporary artist that are very young of age and everything goes smooth to them, like it was a predefined plan. Every exhibition choice, every step is strategic… everything seems unreal, a dream coming true… it is impossible to remain indifferent assisting to such escalations, you can feel inadequate, but, as I told you in may first answer, if you really investigate every single point of the so called art system, you perceive the precariousness, the generalized improvisation. It’s a like a poker match… even with a low point you can win, what is most important is the dialogue, but attention, not the dialogue between two civil speakers, but a background antagonism based upon divergent opinion and ideas. This creates liveliness, a strong antagonism creates movement and interest, a supremacy upon art system creates a dictatorship… and this is not a joke. You see it in how museum directors are chosen. For example those persons that become directors without a gradual course and a certain experience and just few days before were proposing themselves as assistants to some famous critics. And just when they become master of their choice (no one is stupid here), they are immediately conditioned by the dictatorship I was talking about before…just to become part of the system… this is pure totalitarianism. I adore minimal art, Arte Povera, I find Transavanguardia aberrant… a telluric settlement in our beautiful art country. I find many contemporary artists exceptional, Italians too, the problem is that they benefit of some protection and that makes them weak to my eyes. Take minister Bondi’s decisions and the demonstration of dictatorship, the minister himself declared he didn’t understand contemporary art, and, I’m quoting him, “many among those who appreciate it, do not understand it”… the rest comes in consequence. His choices will surely make people discuss a lot, for nothing, people will discuss about what is obvious… anyway there is something positive in it all. Because, if we have in our country the good represented by minimal artist and the evil represented by figurative artists, then let it be war… and let the best win, the day of art Armageddon in Italy is coming. Yes, there is a wave in the world transporting an approach, and I don’t think that Italy, and is not my intention to offend, can count very much on the global system, it is like the third world in contemporary art, but we are here and we cannot avoid to talk about certain things. Maybe we can learn to say no, if we are called to represent our country at the Biennale exhibition and the presuppositions are not in line with our ideas. Gino De Dominicis made this witty marks “works hadn’t the will to go to the Biennale”, and he was taking on a polemic with the curator of that time… but ideologies era is a little picture on the wall of our past. Today we are more opportunist, and coming back to the supporters.. why disappoint them? Today artistic value founds upon results, the economy deriving from a work.. in this case you can talk about Artists (and it is not my opinion!) … a status to exhibit, to possess. A work is beautiful because it has a value and the beauty derives from it. Yes, we can say that some throw genuinely and ingenuously the bait (the work of art), hoping that someone bites, but the artist and the work ascent are a mathematics formula strategy… this does not mean that the artist is not valid, but in the end you do not notice it anymore, it is a matter of economic power… the more expensive fair, the more expensive work, the richest collector… an example: take the skull by Damien Hirst, how can Bolla, with his Svarowsky skull compete with a diamond skull? How can you compete with a Matthew Barney’s video which costs more than 5 million dollars, with a 300 Euro video created with a Panasonic video-camera? How can you compete with a Gallery director who can buy at an auction for 25 Million dollars one of Jeff Koons Hearts, just to defend the artist’s quotation? How can you compete with a person who buys an entire auction house (Christie’s) and sells by auction the works from his own collection and lets thus grow incredibly the price of the works? … I would like to go on… but my little daughter is hungry and I have to go… ciao, see you soon! (R. Gligorow)

You have touched many problems, all of them very interesting. Art system, contemporary opportunism, the poet-Minister Bondi and his populism… Armageddon. Years ago Giulio Carlo Argan theorized the death of art, that is to say the irreversible crisis of the traditional techniques system in industrial and capitalistic society. Art, or better, all the things we continue to call art, is far from being dead; The number of “artists” is incredible and I don’t think Beuys’ idea has come true, in some sense it happened the exact contrary; If all human beings became artist, there would be no need of art, because everyone’s modus Vivendi, wouldn’t require “special visions” . Apart from visions, I am happy to live in a world no more full of ideologies, unfortunately the world risks to be a place where ideas cannot circulate freely. The enormously propagandized civility contrast does not involve persons but the fundamentalist elites, they have all the interest in keeping the dialogue impossible. The homage to Iranian artist Delara Darabi, killed by Ahmadimejad’s regime is also a symbol of this dialogue will, which is often given up by politics in order to isolate in fundamentalisms instead of playing their own authentic role, that is to say governing that polis, since a long time global. I ask you a last comment before ending this conversation and maybe taking it up again in the future. Thank you Robert.
